Promises For The Broken Hearted - Psalm 23:1

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
- Psalm 23:1
There are many references in scripture comparing us to sheep and the Lord being The Good Shepherd. The Lord willingly offers to be the shepherd in our lives. He wants us to belong to Him so we can be under His authority and watchful eye. He wants to be our leader, our caretaker, our defender, protector and provider. He wants to take responsibility for our care and well-being. He doesn’t want us to be on our own, without guidance, or to be defenseless.
David, who wrote this Psalm, was a shepherd. He understood the responsibilities that come with that position and he knew better than most, all the reasons why sheep need a shepherd. This verse is spoken with assurance, confidence and boldness. I think David takes great comfort in saying the Lord is His Shepherd and we should as well. When you read this verse, personalize it…read it in the present tense… the Lord IS…not was or will be, but IS now…MY shepherd … singular…not the world’s shepherd, or the flocks shepherd, but MY shepherd. He sees me. He knows me by name. He cares about me. He watches over me, defends and protects me…right now, at this moment. Because I am submitted to Him and see my need to be dependent on Him, I shall not want, because He has promised to take care of me!
Friend, if the Lord is your Shepherd, He will meet your needs. He will take care of you. Those that seek the Lord will not lack any good thing and we can trust that He knows our needs before we ask and He is faithful to provide.
