I'm seeing this message when I log on. Have not noticed before now. Are we safe to log on?

To answer your question, are we secure, the answer is yes. This is a "protocol" implemented by Google a few years ago. I brought this to everyone's attention over a year and a half ago, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], so I'm surprised that you have just now realized this.
Site owners have the option to purchase an "extra security certificate" which is supposed to give an added layer of protection to sites where require credit card info is entered, such as a site where you buy items or services. When the certificate is purchased, they will put a lock icon and "Secure" on the browser's page information. Sounds okay, but so far there hasn't been a way to to verify that this is a real security upgrade or if this is just another money making scheme by Google. Sites that purchase these "security certificates" may just be paying for (Google and now all the other browsers that have followed suit to cash in on this scheme) a picture of a lock and the words "Secure" without any security software to back it up. There is no way to tell if it is the real deal. Google is a huge monopoly that needs to be dealt with because they are dictating the internet and it's users by manipulating everything that they can. They have no right to make sites who do not buy this "security certificate" look like they are a dangerous site when in fact they are not. I really do hope that Congress does something about Google and breaks up their monopoly for the sake of the internet.
The same basic rules of using the internet apply as they did before: always have a strong password and make sure to have antivirus installed on your computer then you will be safe.
